History of the Psycho Path

Article found in a local newspaper:

“On a cold, foggy night in the Fall of 1925, I experienced the most terrifying night of my life. My story begins in the time of early America, when Indians had free roam of the native land. Many legends abound about the area of land located between Hominy and Bird Creeks north of Tulsa. There is an area of land that forms an island where the most unusual and mysterious stories center around. Longtime residents say there was an ancient curse placed upon this land by the Shaman Indian priests. The Shaman forced all souls that departed this world to remain forever trapped by the powers of the water that circumspect this island.

Over time strange things began to happen in this area of land. In the late 1800’s, despite the stories and local legends a few brave souls decided to settle on an area of land just east of Hominy Creek. They named the settlement Spybuck after one of the original settlers named Jasper Spybuck. These brave souls endured the hardships of settling in untamed territory and the settlement began to grow with the addition of a post office, general store and several log homes. However, horrifying things began to happen in the woods near Spybuck and their determination began to wear away. Due to several floods that had occurred over the years and the unsettling feeling of being watched by unearthly spirits, the settlement moved to a nearby town where the railroad had come through.

The one family that remained behind was the Spybucks. Jasper and Jane Spybuck had a son they named Walter. Records show that Walter was born in 1900. Walter was severely deformed and his family hid him away from society. Walter was a very lonely and deprived child and was locked in his room when any guests happen to visit the Spybucks.

Over time, Jasper Spybuck became foreman for the Black Stallion Oil Company and agreed to lease his land to the company to drill and mine for oil and minerals. According to the oil company’s log for Mr. Spybuck, a mining accident occurred for which he received the blame. Several men died and were buried on the Spybuck’s land. This accident caused Jasper to become extremely depressed and he began to drink and abuse both his wife, Jane and their young son, Walter. Little is known of Mrs. Jane Spybuck outside of what folk in the nearby town relate. They say that whenever she appeared in town, she seemed withdrawn and changed from the friendly young woman she once was. Some say she had all she could take and ran away in the year 1915 never to be seen or heard from again.

Soon after the disappearance of Jane Spybuck, Mr. Jasper Spybuck fell ill and died. A tombstone still stands at his grave on what was once the Spybuck’s land. The deformed and lonely child, Walter Spybuck, was left alone in the home in the woods. His only friends were the souls of those who wandered the land still trapped from the curse of the Shaman. Walter learned to provide for himself at the early age of fifteen. However, his loneliness became unbearable and he began to devise ways to lure innocent guests to his home and keep them there forever.

Deprived of the love and affection of his mother and father, Walter claimed a young bride as one of his first victims. She was a young, beautiful girl who was to be married to a nearby farmer. While preparing for her wedding ceremony her dress caught fire from a candelabrum and she began to run to the creek that flowed through the woods near her home to put out the flames. Walter found the unconscious bride in the creek and took her to his home. The family searched for her in vain for several days before giving up, deciding the creek must have washed her body away. Walter kept the young bride locked up until she died of fear and heartbreak after being separated from her true love.

Another strange incident occurred in the year 1923. An elderly carpetbagger was traveling down the dark desolated road near the old Spybuck land when his automobile broke down. He began to walk in the direction of the nearest town, but when passing through the woods where the Spybucks once lived, he was pursued by a mysterious, deformed being. Running towards the bridge that led to town, he was hit by a car and died instantly. The driver of the car was later questioned, but not fined for the accident.

After hearing of the dark history and strange stories of the events that occurred on this island and especially near the old Spybuck land, I ventured into the woods one fall night, determined to solve the mystery of Walter Spybuck. The locals warned me not to leave the road and go into the woods. But, after crossing the one lane bridge, I stubbornly dismissed their warnings and left the safety of my automobile to wander through the edge of the woods. Stepping over briars and brambles and pushing my way through the tall weeds it seemed I had been walking for miles. My heart was beating faster and I kept hearing strange noises…I told myself it was only my imagination and not to turn back. “Just a little further,” I thought. I wanted to get the story, wanted to find out if Walter Spybuck still lived in these eerie woods.

When I heard the footsteps start following me, I turned and saw him…the deformed being of Walter. Before I knew what had happened he had me in his grip hauling me through the woods to his lair. I call it that, because it was not really a home, there was nothing “homey” about it. He locked me in a room and left me alone. Somehow I gained enough strength to escape the room. I wanted to run, but the reporter side reminded me why I was there in the first place. So, I began to search the room where Walter must have lived and slept. I found one item that gave me what I needed. It was a journal of Walter’s thoughts and descriptions of his experiences as a lonely child living in the woods, an outcast from society. Surprisingly, it was written with much feeling and detail. The entries were horrifying and remarkable at the same time. Suddenly remembering where I was, I began to run. I ran and ran until I found the road that led me to the safety of my automobile. The events of that night will live with me forever. How I narrowly escaped the clutches of Walter and of becoming one of his next victims, one of the trapped souls on the Spybuck land. I knew I had escaped from a madman, a psycho path. I am writing this article to advise those who read it to listen to what the local residence say about this island…Stay Away! But, if you unwisely chose not to heed this warning as I did, you too may find it to be the only way home.”  - Frederic Ray McClure 1926, the Rolling Hills Newspaper

Update! Since the time this article was written a devastating flood hit the island in 1927 where the Spybuck land was located. Since that time, no one ever has heard of or seen Walter Spybuck again. Some say he still roams the woods at night along with the other souls who were trapped there forever. Hunters tell stories of strange sights and noises and the feeling of not being alone in the area. When the owners of Psycho Path heard of the legends, they found a way to purchase the vacant land once owned by the Spybucks. Wanting to learn more about the history and the legends they did extensive research and found the article above. Does Walter, the Psycho Path, still roam these woods looking for souls to join him and the several others who lost their lives on this land? There is only one way to find out and that is to bring new guests to the island to see if one of them might end up a captive soul to Walter Spybuck. The Psycho Path Haunted Attraction crew has stories of their own to tell; of hearing screams, following footsteps and unexplained shapes seen in the night. Perhaps one of our guests will have an experience they will be willing to tell, or may be too terrified to relive after they visit the old Spybuck land, now known as the Psycho Path Haunted Attraction.
